Projection Systems

The map above compares three separate projection systems of the same data. This includes all counties and a specific comparison of the total area in square miles of Alachua, Escambia, Miami-Dade, and Polk County. The results show that while the numbers are similar, there is certainly a difference. According to the table included in the map, Escambia county has the most consistent results. This is likely due to the fact that the State Plane N system is specific to that area, it then uses that same calculation to project to other parts of the world. The largest difference appeared to be from the Miami-Dade county, most likely because it was the furthest from the UTM 16 N zone.

The lesson from this lab was incredibly useful, particularly the table showing the comparison of square miles. I've spent most of my career knowing I need to choose the correct projection system, but understanding why has brought an immense amount of clarity. In Treasure Island, FL I use the State Plane Florida West projection system. To my knowledge, this is the most accurate system for our area.
