Cartographic Design
In this blog post, I will be discussing the creation of a map that showcases public schools in Ward 7, Washington D.C. The main goals were to conceptualize and create a map that effectively serves the needs of the map viewer, while emphasizing important features through visual hierarchy and employing contrast, figure-ground principles, and balance to ensure clarity and engagement.
The process began with a thorough understanding of the assignment requirements and cartographic principles including Gestalt’s Principles of Visual Hierarchy, Contrast, Figure-Ground, and Balance.
Working on this project provided me with a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of cartographic design and the capabilities of ArcGIS Pro. Balancing the technical aspects of GIS software with the artistic elements of map design was both challenging and rewarding. This exercise reinforced the importance of clear visual communication in cartography and has enhanced my skills in both GIS analysis and creative design solutions.
