Typography

The goal of this lab was to be introduced to typography and label the sunny state of Florida. The mission was to blend essential map elements with typographic guidelines, ensuring our maps aren't just informative, but also a delight to the eyes. We aimed to achieve these objectives: defining and inserting those non-negotiable map elements, mastering the art of map labeling in line with typographic principles, and finessing our maps with type placement that speaks clearly to every viewer, regardless of their feature focus. Part of the assignment was to add 3 additional customizations, mine were
  • I made the text Tallahassee large so the map viewer would have an easier time understanding that it was the capital of Florida. I also made it a star symbol to give it further recognition of being a capital.
  • I manually pulled the river label slightly away from the river as I thought it was too close to the feature to read it without appearing too cluttered. In the future, I would use the offset setting.
  • I bolded and italicized the font of the Swamps so it was easier to understand that they were water features as they are green. I decided to make the feature green as I thought it would better differentiate from a lake or other body of water.
