United States Available Jobs
Proportional symbol maps are an effective way to visualize changes in data, especially when dealing with both positive and negative values. In this project, I mapped changes in the number of jobs across US States from December 2007 to July 2015. The challenge was to represent both job gains and losses clearly since ArcGIS Pro's proportional symbology tool can't handle negative values within a single attribute. To work around this, I created two separate layers: one for positive values and another for negative values (converted to positive for display). I then superimposed these layers using different colors to distinguish between gains and losses. This approach provided a clear and meaningful visualization of the economic impact during that period.
By carefully selecting color schemes and scaling, the map effectively communicates both growth and decline in employment. The design choices aimed to maintain clarity despite symbol overlaps, ensuring an accurate and visually appealing representation of the data.
